Seams… Part 2

Right… You learnt EVERYTHING about seams on stockinette stitch on the previous post.

You DID, am I correct?

Well today we’re tackling a different beast. The reverse stockinette seam.

Yeah. I’m NUTS! I am about to seam reverse stockinette stitch because I obey the voices in my head *evil laugh*

Look how that’ll look

Aren’t they NEAT. They’re bloody brilliant, they are!

As before, we set off with a blocked sleeve (why sleeves? read to the end of the post!)

Now let’s revisit what we said last time…

Loose end from CO thread? Check!

Threaded needle? Check!

Push the needle under and out of the first bar – remember the bar between stitches?

Move to opposite side and go under and out of the first bar…

Work some more, then ZIP it up! Don’t pull the thread too tight because then the seam will pucker and look like a badly made Primark top. Pull just enough so the thread creates a similar length bar between stitches.

Uh-oh. We’re running out of yarn. Push the needle THROUGH the fabric and unthread.

Needle, new length of thread.

Push the needle now through the spot JUST ABOVE where you last dropped your thread

Here’s what it looks like from the Wrong Side. I tend to tie a small knot to ensure the yarn doesn’t get pulled out when I’m working. We’ll take care of those threads on another post.

Keep on going, keep on zipping…

When you’re done, pull the thread towards the Right Side and… leave it there. We’ll take care of it soon.

Wasn’t that easy????

You’re done.

Why did I choose a sleeve?

Simple answer – a sleeve has the same amount of rows to seam on both sides. When you’ve to work with a body’s back and fronts, if you worked them separately there’s a great chance that you will not have the same number of rows on back and front – a sleeve doesn’t have that issue.

It’s because of this that I recommend starting your seaming adventure with a sleeve. Once you get the hang of how seaming works, move on to body parts!
