Aitana

Wherever you are, there’s a feeling of change in the air. In the Northern hemisphere, we’re switching to Autumn. There’s the beginning of a chill at night, the need for a blanket….

…and the need for the perfect Autumn garment. Knitted of course!

Aitana made its public debut in June at TNNA – it was featured at the Lorna’s Laces booth as a show-off piece for their new yarn Sportmate. I’ve worked with Lorna’s Laces before, if you remember Chambourcin and Paseo?

Sportmate is just as awesome as Solemate. And for a change, they provided me with a very un-rockandpurl colourway, which at the beginning shocked me and then it made me flex my design muscles!

Aitana is a one-piece, seamless construction.

YES I do know how to do those…

As you may already know I am biased towards garments that are tailored, those that translate a seamstress touch to a knitwear design.

However, with hand-dyed yarns in colourways that share different shades, seamless is the way to go!

This garment starts with a top-down round yoke, separates at the armholes and features a clever touch of shaping and texture…

It is feminine, with its body shape and floaty hipline…

I’m leaving the choices of how you wear it up to you. It has no buttonholes, so it allows you to make them if you want the garment closed, add a zipper if you wish to do so, use a striking shawl pin to add focus on it…

and even open up the hood for a big collar instead of a hood.

How about that!?

Extensively Sized - 301⁄2 (32, 341⁄8, 363⁄8, 381⁄2, 40, 421⁄8, 443⁄8, 461⁄2, 48, 501⁄8, 523⁄8, 541⁄2, 56 , 581⁄8, 603⁄8)” / 77.60 (81.30, 86.80, 92.40, 97.90, 101.60, 107.10, 112.70, 118.20, 121.90, 127.50, 133, 138.50, 142.20, 147.80, 153.30) cm

With an achievable gauge - 22 sts and 30 rows = 4” / 10 cm in St St

In a comfortable needle size - Size US7 / 4.5 mm circular.

The dreamy yarn I used is Lorna’s Laces Sportmate, 70% superwash merino, 30% Outlast with an output of 270 yds / 247 m per 100g skein. And it uses 5 (5, 5, 6, 6, 7, 7, 7, 8, 8, 9, 9, 10, 10, 11, 11) skeins.

What substitutes could you use? Any sport/dk yarn with a good round physical appearance! The stitch patterns use this roundness to make the edgings pop out!

This pattern has over 7 pages of detailed instructions, with a superior schematic – and if you remember this post, you will be glad to know I’ve gone with the most instructional method. There’s none of that “inc 25 evenly along the row”! There’s exactly how many stitches you should knit between each increase, to make your experience even easier.
