Podcasting around

Guess what? I have a podcast! Since moving to the USA, life, work, keeping up with family and friends…has been tough. My friend Joeli has a superb podcast (YouTube search for joeliskitchen to see her 30+ episodes) and she kept telling me how fun it is to run it. She told me how to start figuring it out, what to discuss on a first episode, and how editing isn’t that much of a chore. Turns out she was right!   In episode 0 I discuss a bit of my background, how my upbringing has shaped my career as a designer and what little work...

Life is messy!

I have only just noticed that if you are a regular blog reader but not a fan of social media, you may not have heard the news… Rock + Purl is moving overseas! Back in November, my husband was told there was a 9-month plan to divest the site he works at, rendering him unemployed by June. It's been what, 3 weeks? 3 weeks of blaming days-too long, pillows-not-plump-enough, not-my-bed and one-coffee-too-many. “Ruth will sleep anywhere” has been a...

Paying your dues

This post comes hand in hand with my previous post regarding compensation for your work and what kind of work is worth working for. Vanessa, from MMAAC, is a clever lady. She makes really unusual stuff to sell through her Etsy shop, and we've become quite friendly over twitter. Upon reading my post on Friday, Vanessa said: @MMAAC: @rockandpurl Question! At what point, as a newbie, do you STOP taking free/low paying work? I understand paying dues but at what point does it stop? Original Tweet link Paying dues… Paying dues is...

SSP – good start!!

As you've seen recently, I have declared this the year I make Selfish Socks a PLAN and not an afterthought as something to do when I'm in between projects. My first chosen yarn was A Stash Addict Sock in Rainbow. This yarn features short colour repeats, but some of them overlapped in a manner that, in a small circumference such as a foot, it created pooling. I don't like pooling – I love crazy yarn that shows off its colours, though! I began playing with some unusual stitch patterns, with slipped stitches, double wraps,...
